When Do I need to See a Periodontist?

Infections of the gums which can eventually destroy the support of your natural teeth are periodontal diseases. Over time areas of the bone can be impacted which is then called periodontitis. At that stage, the gums can recede from the teeth and form pockets of bacteria and debris. The end result can be the loss of teeth as the bone deteriorates.
Periodontists have specialized education in gums and bone. Periodontists handle soft tissue removal, hard tissue recontouring, deep pocket cleanings, bone grafting, and dental implants.

So, when should you see a periodontist?

You Should Consider Seeing a Periodontist If:

  • You have pain when eating and biting down causes discomfort, you may have infections around the gumline.
  • Your gums are swollen, red, or bleed after brushing or flossing. This is an early sign of periodontal infection.
  • You have chronic bad breath even after brushing and flossing.
  • Your teeth are loose or you notice a change in your bite pattern due to loose teeth.
  • You have receding gums and deep pockets between your gums and teeth.
  • You smoke or have a history of smoking, have a family history of periodontal disease, or if you are diabetic.
  • You are over the age of 30. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined that half of people over 30 have some form of gum disease.
